RÉKA SZILVAY

Viulutaiteilija, professor in Sibelius Academy

Sibelius-Akatemian viulumusiikin professori Réka Szilvay on yksi arvostetuimmista suomalaisista viulisteista. Hänen kansainvälinen läpimurtonsa tapahtui vuonna 1999 hänen debytoidessaan Wienin Musikverein –salissa Sibeliuksen viulukonsertolla. Sittemmin hän on konsertoinut mm. seuraavien orkestereiden solistina: London Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Mariinski Orchestra St. Petersburg, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, Tonkünstler-Orchester Austria ja Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg.

Hän on vieraillut usein Salzburger Festspielhausissa Mozarteum -orkesterin solistina ja useita kertoja Wienin Musikverein -salissa viimeksi Dallasin sinfoniaorkesterin solistina, sekä Japanissa Tokion Suntory Hall -salissa Super World -orkesterin solistina. Suomalaisorkestereiden solistina hän on esiintynyt niin kotimaassa kuin myös ulkomailla mm. Itävallassa, Saksassa, Singaporessa ja Etelä-Amerikassa.

Réka Szilvay on esiintynyt merkittävien kapellimestarien johdolla, joista mainittakoon muun muassa Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Valery Gergiev, Leif Segerstam, Andrew Litton, Sakari Oramo, Adam Fischer, Osmo Vänskä, Neeme Järvi, Mikko Franck, Markus Stenz, Juha Kangas ja Fabio Luisi. Hän on soittanut lukuisia resitaalikonsertteja niin Suomessa kuin muuallakin Euroopassa, Japanissa ja Yhdysvalloissa maailman huomattavimmissa konserttisaleissa kuten Carnegie Hall New York, Konzerthaus Wien, Kölner Philharmonie, Wigmore Hall London, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Cité de la Musique Paris, Megaron Concert Hall Athens ja Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles.

Réka Szilvay on vieraillut useilla kansainvälisillä festivaaleilla, joista mainittakoon Salzburger Festspiele, Helsingin Juhlaviikot, Kuhmon Kamarimusiikki, Turun Musiikkijuhlat, Mikkelin Musiikkijuhlat, Savonlinnan Oopperajuhlat, Korsholman festivaali, Klangbogen Wien, Haydn Festspiele Eisenstadt, Festival Grafenegg ja Singapore Arts Festival.

Since her outstanding debut at Musikverein Wien in 1999 the international carrier of the young Finnish violinist Réka Szilvay has developed continuously and she has given numerous concerts all over Europe, China, Japan, Taiwan, South America and the USA.

She appeared as soloist with renowned orchestras such as the Mariinsky Orchestra St. Petersburg, the London Philharmonic, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and has visited repeatedly the Salzburger Festspielhaus with the Mozarteum Orchestra and several times the Musikverein Wien, last with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. She was guest at the Tokyo Suntory Hall with the Super World Orchestra and has also performed with the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orquestra Nacional do Porto, the Polish Chamber Orchestra, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, the Tonkünstler Orchestra Austria, the Haydn Philharmony and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg.

Réka Szilvay appears as soloist with all major Finnish orchestras. She regularly performs with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Leif Segerstam and toured with them to Germany, Austria, Singapore and South-America including her debut at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In addition she was invited to tour with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra to Austria and the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra to Germany. In Scandinavia she performed on tour with the Orkester Norden in Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm amongst others.

She works with many significant conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Leif Segerstam, Adam Fischer, Neeme Järvi, Mikko Franck, Andrew Litton, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Mark Wigglesworth, Sakari Oramo, Markus Stenz, Osmo Vänskä, Fabio Luisi, Rumon Gamba, Libor Pesek, Sian Edwards, Hubert Soudant, János Fürst.

Born in Helsinki into a musical Hungarian-Austrian family, she started to play the violin at the age of four under the guidance of her father, Géza Szilvay, originator of the Colourstrings method. She gained experience performing on stage at an early age: As a child soloist, she appeared on Finnish television more than 50 times, first performing with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra at the age of ten. She entered the Sibelius Academy at 12, studying with Tuomas Haapanen. From 1992 to 1998 she studied at the University of Music in Vienna, attending the class of Gerhard Schulz (Alban Berg Quartet). She has also participated in master classes with Sándor Végh, Ana Chumachenco and György Kurtág.  In 2006 Réka Szilvay was appointed as the Professor of Violin Music at the Sibelius Academy Helsinki.
