Kaari Martin

‘I have not consciously chosen to combine flamenco with modern dance. My style is a result of the need to express myself freely.’

Kaari Martin flamenco dancer, choreographer, pedagogue, the second Artistic Director of Compañía Kaari & Roni Martin, is an internationally noted artist. In 2012, her work The Raven won the first prize for solo choreography, music and costume design in the world’s most prestigious choreography competition, Certamen de Coreografia de Danza Española y Flamenco, in Madrid.

As her most important works Kaari sees the choreographies Anna Karenina, KILL Carmen, La Femme Rouge, The Raven, and Pippi Longstocking, all of which she has composed for her own company.

Another significant recent work On a string is an interpretation of the Sibelius Violin concerto, performed with the Finnish National Opera prima ballerina Minna Tervamäki and the violinist Pekka Kuusisto.

In addition to teaching, performing and composing choreographs, Kaari has acted as a board member and in workgroups of several flamenco corporations and festivals. She has also written articles and reviews about flamenco for dance magazines.

Among other grants and prizes she has received, the Finnish Cultural Foundation honored Kaari with the award for an outstanding cultural accomplishment and triumph of Finnish flamenco.
