Kaari Martin is a Finnish dancer, pedagogue and choreographer. She is known for her flamenco dancing performances that have influences of modern dancing. The dance group Compañía Kaari Martin led by Martin herself is one of the most successful modern flamenco groups originating outside of Spain.
Kaari Martin is the only foreign choreographer that has been awarded the first prize in flamenco world’s most important choreography competition Certamen de Coreografía de Danza Española y Flamenco. Martin has worked as a pedagogue both in Finland and abroad. She is the Finnish representative to the artistic board of a Nordic Flamenco Festival.
Works by Compañía Kaari Martin include Pippi Longstocking (2009), The Raven (2010), La Femme Rouge (2013) and KILL Carmen (2015). Other significant recent works include On a String, which is an interpretation of the violin concerto by Sibelius, performed in 2010 together with the Finnish National Opera prima ballerina Minna Tervamäki. In 2011 they also performed the piece together with the violinist Pekka Kuusisto. In 2014, Martin received the award for an outstanding cultural accomplishment and triumph of Finnish flamenco from The Finnish Cultural Foundation.
